The seven ijazat with an unbroken sanad

Each ijaza granted by the department, with its description and its own requirements, followed by the ten readers and their transmitters.

Ijazat granted

Seven ijazat with an unbroken sanad

First

Ijaza in the riwaya of Hafs from 'Asim by the way of the Shatibiyya

This is the riwaya in which most of the Muslim world recites today: the riwaya of Imam Hafs ibn Sulayman al-Kufi, from his teacher 'Asim ibn Abi al-Najud al-Asadi, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami. Al-Sulami recited before five of our masters the Companions – may Allah be pleased with them all –: 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, Ubayy ibn Ka'b and Zayd ibn Thabit al-Ansari, who recited before our master the Messenger of Allah Muhammad ibn 'Abdillah ﷺ, from Jibril – peace be upon him –, from the Lord of Might, blessed and exalted.

Requirements

The general requirements listed above.

Second

Ijaza in the reading of Imam 'Asim through his two transmitters (Shu'ba and Hafs)

Requirements

  1. Having studied all the rules of tajwid and applying them with mastery.
  2. Having studied the principles (usul) of the riwaya of Shu'ba from 'Asim.
  3. Understanding the points of difference between the two riwayat.
Third

Ijaza in the riwaya of Hafs from 'Asim by the way of the Tayyibat al-Nashr

For a woman who has already been granted the ijaza of Hafs by the Shatibiyya, or has mastered that riwaya, and wishes to go further in the riwaya of Hafs from 'Asim by the way of the Tayyiba: she then recites according to all the ways that have reached us from it, 52 in number.

Requirements

  1. Knowing these ways and the differences they contain, by memorising the poem Talkhis Sarih al-Nass fi al-kalimat al-mukhtalaf fiha 'an Hafs by Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz 'Uyun al-Sud – may Allah have mercy on him – and studying its commentary.
  2. Training in jam' (combined recitation of the ways).
  3. Reciting the entire Noble Mushaf by heart according to those ways, before a female teacher who holds the ijaza in them with an unbroken sanad to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Fourth

Ijaza in the ten readings by the way of the Shatibiyya and the Durra, reading by reading (ifrad)

For a woman who has memorised the Glorious Qur'an, mastered the riwaya of Hafs and wishes to become acquainted with the other Qur'anic readings: she recites a complete khatma for each riwaya or qira'a separately.

Fifth

Ijaza in the ten readings by the way of the Tayyibat al-Nashr

This is the highest certificate in the ten readings, through their thousand ways, which Imam Ibn al-Jazari set in verse in a poem of a thousand lines, the Tayyibat al-Nashr fi al-qira'at al-'ashr. A woman who wishes to obtain this ijaza begins by memorising it and understanding its ways and the finer points of its questions, then trains in the readings one by one before a female teacher who holds the ijaza in them. Once she has mastered them, she begins a complete khatma of the ten readers from the beginning of the Qur'an to its end, and thereby obtains the ijaza in the Glorious Qur'an in the ten major readings by the way of the Tayyibat al-Nashr, the highest level of mutawatir transmission that exists in our time.

Sixth

The ways of Nafi'

Requirements

  1. Having studied the principles and rules specific to the transmitter or reader.
  2. Training in combining (jam') the variants (awjuh), riwayat and qira'at.
  3. Having studied the justification (tawjih) of the various riwayat and qira'at; noting that if the student combines three readings or more, she must memorise the reference verses (shawahid) from the Shatibiyya or the Durra.
Seventh

Ijaza in the ten readings by the way of the Shatibiyya and the Durra in combined recitation (jam')

For a woman who has mastered the riwaya of Hafs and wishes to combine the seven or the ten readings.

Requirements for the ijaza in jam'

  1. Memorising the poem Hirz al-Amani wa wajh al-Tahani fi al-qira'at al-sab' by Imam al-Shatibi (1,173 lines), for a woman who wishes to combine the seven readings.
  2. Memorising the poem Al-Durra al-Mudiyya fi al-qira'at al-thalath al-mardiyya by Imam Ibn al-Jazari (240 lines), for a woman who wishes to combine the ten.
  3. Understanding the principles and rules of these readings, and studying their justification.
  4. Training in the readings one after another before a female teacher who holds the ijaza in them; then, once mastered, beginning a complete khatma of the ten readers in jam', from the beginning of the Qur'an to its end, and thereby obtaining the ijaza in the Glorious Qur'an in the seven readings by the way of the Shatibiyya, or in the ten by the way of the Shatibiyya and the Durra.
