Ijaza
Rules of the Ijazat Council
The rules for sanads, online recitation, the muqri'a, the Qur'anic Ijazat Council and the teaching method.
Rules and requirements
What the Qur'anic Ijazat Council requires
Rules for Qur'anic sanads
- The sanad must be unbroken from the shaykh (or shaykha) granting the ijaza to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, from Jibril – peace be upon him –, from the Lord of Might, blessed and exalted.
- It must state that the recitation was done by heart (otherwise, the mujaza is asked about it).
- It must be verified that the Qur'an was recited in full (a complete khatma from beginning to end) with all the variants of the riwaya or qira'a, and not, for example, each quarter of a hizb with a single variant.
- The sanads are reviewed by the Qur'anic Ijazat Council.
Rules for ijaza recitation online
Ijaza recitation online is permitted under specific rules and conditions:
- The internet connection must be strong, and audio and video must remain clear for both teacher and student throughout the session; otherwise the online recitation is suspended and completed in person from the point where it stopped.
- At least ten juz' must be recited in person (consecutive or not).
- A follow-up interview is held in an audio room (Zoom) every five juz', or as the Council deems appropriate.
- The student turns on her camera, observing the religious rules: wearing hijab, without adornment.
- The sanad states that she recited by heart, remotely, the juz' read online with audio and video.
Requirements for the muqri'a granting the ijaza
- Following the way of Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'a.
- Observing religiously appropriate dress and hijab, without excessive adornment among women.
- Being cheerful and welcoming, gentle with the reciters, forbearing and patient.
- Committing to attend the appointments she sets for the student, and excusing herself only for compelling reasons.
- Studying with the student the rules of tajwid, of stopping and starting (waqf and ibtida') and of the Uthmanic orthography (rasm), and regularly asking her about the reference verses.
- Training her to correct other students before the end of the khatma.
The Qur'anic Ijazat Council
- It consists of three members who received directly from Shaykh Ayman Suwayd – may Allah preserve him – or from the first generation, recognised for their mastery of recitation and teaching, their good character and their uninterrupted practice of iqra'; then in order of proximity.
- They follow the creed of Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'a.
- They have experience in ijaza recitation (having granted the ijaza to at least five students reading by reading, and to one student in the ten readings in jam').
- They adhere to the method handed down to us by Shaykh Ayman, as he recited before his teachers (study and questioning on everything concerning the riwaya or qira'a).
- If the Council finds that a reciter has mastery, it authorises her for the ijaza in the riwaya of Hafs from 'Asim by the way of the Tayyibat al-Nashr, or in the ten readings in jam', provided she has memorised the required poems.
- A trainee student is brought to recite before the Council, and the ijaza candidate corrects her, in the middle and at the end of the khatma.
Teaching method
- During the ijaza khatma, the muqri'a studies with the reciter the rules of tajwid and asks her about the finer points (for example the chapter of the Uthmanic orthography, stopping and starting, stopping at the ends of words, assimilations, etc.), as well as the principles of the riwaya or qira'a in which she recites and the lexical differences (farsh al-huruf). She studies with her the justification of each reading or riwaya, trains her in the specific variants until she masters them, and asks her about the reference verses of the poems she has memorised according to the riwaya or qira'a.
- She trains her to teach recitation and correct mistakes, by bringing her a volunteer student.
